    Summary

    T-2 toxin exposure in lambs caused reduced white blood cell counts (leukopenia) and lymphocyte counts (lymphopenia). This study is the first to report these toxic effects and lymphoid atrophy in ruminants.

    Background:

    • T-2 toxin is a mycotoxin that can contaminate animal feed.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the immunological and pathological impacts of T-2 toxin on lambs.
    • To document hematological and biochemical changes following T-2 toxin administration.

    Main Methods:

    • Lambs were administered T-2 toxin daily for 21 days at two different doses (0.6 or 0.3 mg/kg body weight) within a protein-reduced diet.
    • Blood and bone marrow samples were collected for hematological, biochemical, and immunological analyses (mitogen assay).

    • These findings represent the first documented evidence of such effects in sheep fed T-2 toxin.
    • The study highlights the significant immunological and pathological risks associated with T-2 toxin contamination in animal feed.
