Surgery for chronic pericarditis--thirty-years' experience.

A Mizuno, K Asano

    Japanese Circulation Journal
    |November 1, 1983

    Summary

Surgical interventions for pericarditis, including pericardiectomy, show excellent results. Procedures for constrictive pericarditis are increasingly performed on older patients, with a decline in pericardial tuberculosis cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Thoracic Surgery

    Background:

    • Pericarditis, a condition affecting the pericardium, presents in chronic exudative or constrictive forms.
    • Surgical intervention has been a cornerstone in managing these conditions, excluding trauma or malignancy-related cases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the surgical outcomes for chronic exudative and constrictive pericarditis over three decades.
    • To analyze trends in patient demographics and etiology, specifically pericardial tuberculosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 75 patients undergoing surgical treatment for pericarditis.
    • Procedures included pericardiectomy and pericardial fenestration.

    Main Results:

    • Excellent surgical results were achieved in the majority of cases.
    • Patients undergoing surgery for constrictive pericarditis were older in the last decade.
    • A significant decrease in pericardial tuberculosis incidence was observed over the past two decades.

    Conclusions:

    • Pericardiectomy is highly effective for constrictive pericarditis.
    • Pericardiectomy is also beneficial for chronic exudative pericarditis, particularly cholesterol or tuberculous subtypes.
    • Shifting demographics and reduced tuberculosis incidence impact surgical management strategies.
