Background:

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder with suspected neuroanatomical underpinnings.
Previous studies have reported various structural brain abnormalities in schizophrenia patients.

Purpose of the Study:

To quantitatively assess structural differences in the diencephalic region between chronic schizophrenic patients and healthy controls.
To investigate specific measurements including ventricle widths and nuclear densities.

Main Methods:

A quantitative computed tomography (CT) study was conducted on 23 chronic schizophrenic patients and 23 normal controls.
Measurements included third ventricle width, Sylvian fissure widths, and densities of the caudate nucleus, thalamic nucleus, and medial temporal lobe.

Main Results:

Schizophrenic patients exhibited significantly increased widths of the third ventricle and Sylvian fissures.
A significantly greater density was observed in the periventricular nuclei (caudate and thalamus) of schizophrenic patients.

Conclusions:

The study identified an atypical association of apparent atrophy (enlarged ventricles/fissures) with increased density in specific brain nuclei in chronic schizophrenia.
These findings contribute to understanding the complex neurobiology of schizophrenia and warrant further investigation into the underlying mechanisms.
