    Summary

Cognitive abilities like analytical and spatial skills differ between genders and decline with age. Social group significantly correlates with intelligence factors, particularly verbal and spatial abilities.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Cognitive Science
    • Sociology

    Background:

    • Cognitive factor distribution in adult populations is crucial for understanding human intelligence.
    • Previous research has indicated potential differences in cognitive abilities based on demographic factors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the distribution of cognitive factors in a representative adult population sample.
    • To examine age and gender-related differences in cognitive abilities.
    • To explore the correlation between social group and cognitive performance.

    Main Methods:

    • A representative sample of 3,064 adults aged 18-65 from the Stockholm county (1970) participated.
    • Participants underwent a health examination including psychometric testing using the Dureman-Sälde test battery.
    • Non-response rate was 18.7%, with higher rates in males (20.7%) than females (16.6%).

    Main Results:

    • Men scored higher than women in analytical and spatial abilities, but not verbal ability.
    • Analytical ability showed a steady decline across all ages.
    • Spatial ability declined from age 36-45, while verbal ability peaked in this age group with limited decline thereafter.
    • A significant positive correlation was found between social group and intelligence factors, especially verbal and spatial abilities.
    • An age-related widening of the gap in verbal and spatial abilities between social groups was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Cognitive abilities exhibit distinct patterns of distribution concerning gender, age, and social group.
    • The findings highlight the influence of socio-economic status on cognitive performance.
    • Standardization for social group in psychometric testing is recommended for practical applications.
