Apoptosis is a combination of two Greek words, 'apo' and 'ptosis,' meaning separation and falling off, respectively. Hippocrates used this word to describe gangrene, which was caused due to bandaging of fractured bones.     • It is logically and phenomenologically coherent to speak of "your death" (the death of another).
    • It is impossible to coherently speak of "my death" as an experienced event, as one cannot experience their own cessation.
    • Dying is experienceable, but death (as the cessation of self) is not.

    Conclusions:

    • The term "death" is appropriate for the demise of another individual.
    • A new term, "omega," is proposed for the cessation of self, which is currently misconstrued as "my death."
    • This distinction clarifies the subjective experience of mortality and the objective event of demise.
