Hydatidosis: a first approach for serological standardization.

    Summary

Common antigens exist between Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis hydatidosis. A specific fraction of Italian hydatid fluid showed high sensitivity in ELISA tests for diagnosing both infections.

    Area of Science:

    • Parasitology
    • Immunology
    • Medical Diagnostics

    Background:

    • Hydatidosis, caused by Echinococcus species, is a significant global parasitic disease.
    • Accurate serological diagnosis is crucial for managing Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence of common antigens in hydatid fluids from different geographical regions.
    • To evaluate the diagnostic potential of these antigens against human hydatidosis sera.

    Main Methods:

    • Hydatid fluids were collected from three continents.
    • Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) was employed using these fluids as antigens.
    • Human sera from confirmed E. granulosus and E. multilocularis cases were tested.

    Main Results:

    • The tested hydatid fluid antigens demonstrated good sensitivity across all examined sera.
    • Evidence suggests the existence of shared antigens between E. granulosus and E. multilocularis.
    • A specific 0.8M fraction of Italian hydatid fluid exhibited particularly strong reactivity.

    Conclusions:

    • Common antigens are present in hydatid fluids, facilitating cross-reactive diagnosis.
    • The identified antigens, especially the 0.8M Italian fraction, hold promise for improved hydatidosis diagnostic tools.
