    Summary

Pulmonary infiltrates, a serious side effect, can develop in patients taking the antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone. Radiologists should monitor for early lung changes in patients with amiodarone therapy history.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Pulmonology
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Amiodarone (Cordarone) is an antiarrhythmic medication used for cardiac arrhythmias.
    • Its evaluation in the United States has revealed potential adverse effects.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report the occurrence of pulmonary infiltrates in patients treated with amiodarone.
    • To alert radiologists to a potential serious side effect of amiodarone therapy.

    Main Methods:

    • Observational study of 34 patients receiving amiodarone.
    • Dosage: 200-800 mg daily.
    • Duration: 1.5 to 12 months.

    Main Results:

    • Six out of 34 patients (17.6%) developed pulmonary infiltrates.
    • Two patients died, one recovered after discontinuation, and three had residual abnormalities.
    • Two patients with residual abnormalities continued amiodarone with steroids.

    Conclusions:

    • Amiodarone therapy can lead to serious pulmonary complications.
    • Early detection by radiologists is crucial for managing amiodarone-induced lung injury.
