    Summary

    Prolonged hyperbaric oxygen therapy caused myopia in all patients. Seven patients developed nuclear cataracts, suggesting oxidative damage to lens proteins may cause this condition.

    Background:

    • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is used for various medical conditions.
    • Reversible myopia is a known side effect of HBOT.
    • The potential for HBOT to cause cataracts in humans has not been well-documented.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of prolonged hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the human lens.
    • To determine if HBOT can induce cataract formation.
    • To explore the underlying mechanisms of HBOT-induced ocular changes.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study involving 25 patients undergoing HBOT.
    • Ophthalmological examinations including refraction and lens assessment were performed before, during, and after treatment.
    • Patients received 150 or more exposures to hyperbaric oxygen.

    Main Results:

    • All 25 patients exhibited a myopic shift during HBOT.
    • Fifteen patients had clear lens nuclei pre-treatment.
    • Seven of these 15 patients developed nuclear cataracts with decreased visual acuity during HBOT.

    • Prolonged HBOT can induce myopic shifts and nuclear cataracts in the human lens.
    • The findings support the hypothesis that oxidative damage to lens proteins is a mechanism for HBOT-induced nuclear cataract.
    • This study highlights a previously unreported cataractogenic effect of HBOT in humans.
