    Persistent hyperuricemia, a condition of high serum urate levels, may protect against rheumatoid arthritis flares. This suggests a potential link between high uric acid and reduced rheumatoid inflammation.

    Background:

    • A well-established negative association exists between gout and rheumatoid arthritis.
    • The underlying mechanisms for this mutual exclusion remain unclear.
    • A potential protective immunosuppressive effect of hyperuricemia has been proposed.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the hypothesis that persistent hyperuricemia may confer protection against rheumatoid arthritis.
    • To assess the relationship between serum urate levels and rheumatoid arthritis disease activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective chart review of 160 rheumatoid arthritis patients with at least one year of follow-up.
    • Selection of patients with persistent hyperuricemia (serum urate > 7.5 mg% for ≥ 6 months).
