    Summary

    Fetal rabbit respiratory epithelium shows ciliary activity by day 26, but mucociliary transport is immature due to cellular and structural deficits. This study reveals early ciliary function despite developmental immaturity.

    Background:

    • Morphological studies of respiratory epithelium generation are common.
    • Mucociliary activity in fetal respiratory epithelium remains underexplored.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate ciliary activity and mucociliary function in fetal rabbit respiratory tracts.
    • To examine respiratory epithelial cells using electron microscopy.

    Main Methods:

    • Scanning and transmission electron microscopy of fetal rabbit nasal and tracheal epithelial cells.
    • Observation of ciliary activity and mucociliary transport from day 25 to day 29 of gestation.

    Main Results:

    • Ciliary activity initiated on day 26, comparable to adult levels.
    • Mucociliary transport function observed from day 27.
    • Quantitative and qualitative immaturity noted by day 29, including lower ciliated cell ratio, fewer cilia per cell, and basal foot directional disorder.

    Conclusions:

    • Respiratory cilia are morphologically ready for motion and activated around day 26.
    • Poorer fetal mucociliary transport results from qualitative immaturity (basal foot disorder) despite near-normal ciliary beating.
