    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Psychological assessment
    • Personality disorders

    Background:

    • The borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex psychiatric condition characterized by pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and emotions.
    • Accurate diagnosis and differentiation from other psychiatric disorders are crucial for effective treatment.
    • The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is a widely used tool for psychological assessment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the MMPI profiles of patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.
    • To compare the MMPI characteristics of borderline patients with a heterogeneous control group.
    • To assess the utility of the MMPI in differentiating borderline personality disorder.

    Main Methods:

    • Fourteen patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder using the Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines were assessed.
    • A control group of 7 diagnostically heterogeneous patients was included for comparison.
    • Mean group MMPI profiles were analyzed and compared between the two groups.

    Main Results:

    • Borderline patients exhibited a significantly more elevated MMPI profile compared to controls.
    • Key differences included greater hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria, and schizotypal features in borderline patients.
    • Borderline patients also showed more deviant self-presentation and less defensiveness.
    • Significant heterogeneity in symptomatology was observed within the borderline patient subsample.
    • Subtle MMPI items did not prove more effective in discriminating borderline from control patients.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings offer partial support for the construct validity of the borderline personality disorder syndrome.
    • The MMPI demonstrates usefulness in differentiating borderline personality disorder from other psychiatric disorders.
    • Clinical heterogeneity within the borderline population necessitates careful interpretation of assessment data.
