[Intracapsular cataract extraction using cyclodialysis. A useful method].

    Summary

Combined cataract extraction and cyclodialysis surgery improved vision and lowered intraocular pressure in most patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. This surgical approach offers a satisfactory option for managing concurrent cataracts and glaucoma.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Glaucoma Research
    • Cataract Surgery

    Context:

    • Cataract extraction is frequently performed to improve vision.
    • Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) often requires concurrent management with cataract surgery.
    • Medication control of POAG can be challenging.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of combined intracapsular cataract extraction and cyclodialysis in patients with POAG.
    • To assess changes in visual acuity and intraocular pressure (IOP) post-surgery.
    • To determine the impact on glaucoma medication requirements.

    Summary:

    • Thirty patients with POAG underwent combined cataract extraction and cyclodialysis.
    • Significant visual acuity improvement was observed in most cases.
    • Mean IOP decreased from 22.8 mm Hg preoperatively to 14.4 mm Hg at final follow-up.
    • Glaucoma medication requirements were markedly reduced.

    Impact:

    • Combined cataract extraction and cyclodialysis is a satisfactory procedure for selected patients with concurrent cataracts and POAG.
    • The procedure effectively reduces IOP and medication burden.
    • Contraindications include previous inflammatory glaucoma and inability to tolerate specific long-term medications.
