Malignant transformation in a thymic cyst.

Summary

This is the first reported case of thymic cyst malignancy. A well-differentiated papillary squamous cell carcinoma in a thymic cyst was successfully removed with no signs of metastasis.

Background:

Thymic cysts are rare, benign mediastinal masses.
Malignant transformation of thymic cysts has not been previously documented.

Observation:

A case of a patient presenting with a thymic cyst was observed.
The cyst was found to have undergone malignant transformation.

Findings:

The first documented instance of well-differentiated papillary squamous cell carcinoma arising within a preexisting thymic cyst.
Surgical excision of the tumor was performed.
No evidence of metastasis was detected 6.5 years post-surgery.

Implications:

This case expands the known spectrum of thymic lesions.
Highlights the importance of considering malignancy in complex thymic cysts.
Suggests surgical management can be effective for this rare condition.
