    Summary

    Heart rate variability declines with age, but not primarily due to reduced respiratory influences. This study found that vagal control (respiratory sinus arrhythmia) decreased less than sympathetic-related vasomotor frequencies in older men.

    Background:

    • Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation of the heart.
