    Background:

    • Binocular summation enhances visual sensitivity compared to monocular vision.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate how binocular summation is affected by background contrast during simple contrast detection and contrast discrimination tasks.
    • To quantify the relationship between signal contrast and detectability (d') under monocular and binocular viewing conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured monocular and binocular psychometric functions for sine-wave grating detection (0.5 c/deg).
    • Assessed simple detection (grating alone) and contrast discrimination (grating superimposed on a background).
    • Modeled the detectability (d') dependence on signal contrast (C) using the function d' = (C/C')n.

    Main Results:

    • Binocular summation was significant for simple detection (at least twice monocular detectability).
    • Binocular summation decreased with increasing background contrast for discrimination tasks.
    • Little to no binocular summation was observed for contrast discrimination on a 25% contrast background.

    Conclusions:

    • Binocular contrast summation is significantly reduced by the presence of background contrast.
    • The effectiveness of binocular summation is task-dependent, diminishing more rapidly for discrimination than detection as background contrast rises.
