    Summary

The Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL) flap allows a large skin area to be raised on a small muscle pedicle. This makes it versatile for reconstructing defects in the groin, perineum, lower abdomen, and over bony prominences.

    Area of Science:

    • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
    • Surgical Anatomy
    • Musculocutaneous Flaps

    Background:

    • The Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL) flap is a reconstructive tool in plastic surgery.
    • Understanding its unique anatomical properties is crucial for effective utilization.

    Observation:

    • The TFL flap uniquely allows a significantly larger skin island to be elevated relative to its muscular component.
    • This characteristic is attributed to the vascularity provided by the small muscular pedicle.

    Findings:

    • A large skin island (three times the area of the muscle) can be safely elevated on a small TFL muscular pedicle.
    • This anatomical configuration facilitates its application in various reconstructive scenarios.

    Implications:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • The TFL flap offers broad applicability for repairing defects in the groin, perineum, and lower abdomen.
    • It is also effective for coverage of the trochanter, ischium, and sacrum, demonstrating its versatility in complex reconstructions.
