    Summary

The Mitchell osteotomy effectively corrects hallux valgus (bunion) deformity, significantly reducing key angular measurements. This surgical repair offers durable results with minimal complications like nonunion.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Podiatric Medicine
    • Skeletal Deformity Correction

    Background:

    • Hallux valgus, commonly known as a bunion, is a prevalent foot deformity.
    • Surgical correction aims to restore proper foot biomechanics and alleviate pain.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of the Mitchell osteotomy for hallux valgus repair.
    • To assess the degree of deformity correction and complication rates.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective review of 33 Mitchell-Hawkins osteotomies performed on 25 consecutive patients.
    • Analysis of pre- and post-operative radiographic measurements, including the first intermetatarsal angle and hallux abductus angle.

    Main Results:

    • Significant average reductions were observed: 6.1 degrees in the first intermetatarsal angle and 18.4 degrees in the hallux abductus angle.
    • The procedure successfully corrected elevated intermetatarsal and proximal articular set angles at a single osteotomy site.
    • No instances of osteotomy nonunion were reported.

    Conclusions:

    • The Mitchell osteotomy provides satisfactory and durable correction for hallux valgus deformity.
    • Metatarsalgia was the most common complication (9%), often linked to pre-existing conditions or technical factors.
