    Summary

This study found that higher alcohol doses increase positive mood, while lower doses can cause negative feelings. Frequent alcohol consumers experience greater mood benefits from alcohol than infrequent drinkers.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychopharmacology
    • Affective Neuroscience

    Background:

    • Alcohol consumption significantly impacts mood and behavior.
    • Understanding dose-dependent effects and individual differences is crucial for alcohol research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the dose-dependent effects of alcohol on mood.
    • To examine how alcohol consumption frequency influences mood responses.
    • To explore the relationship between subjective intoxication and mood alterations.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, Latin square design was employed.
    • Three alcohol doses (0.41, 0.63, 0.85 g/kg) were administered.
    • Mood ratings were collected from subjects at seven time points over 3 hours.

    Main Results:

    • Higher alcohol doses (0.85 g/kg) primarily induced euphoria, extraversion, and reduced tension.
    • Lower alcohol doses tended to elicit more negative mood states.
    • Frequent alcohol consumers reported greater positive mood effects compared to rare drinkers.
    • Subjective intoxication ratings varied in meaning across different dose levels and time points.

    Conclusions:

    • Alcohol's mood effects are dose-dependent, with higher doses promoting positive affect.
    • Alcohol consumption frequency moderates the affective benefits derived from alcohol.
    • The interpretation of subjective intoxication is complex and influenced by alcohol dosage and timing.
