We report two cases of primary meningococcal pericarditis, a rare condition. Both patients survived, highlighting a better prognosis compared to other forms of purulent pericarditis.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Neisseria meningitidis

    Background:

    • Primary meningococcal pericarditis is a rare but serious infection.
    • Neisseria meningitidis can cause purulent pericarditis, a potentially fatal condition.

    Observation:

    • Two patients with primary meningococcal pericarditis were treated.
    • The first patient underwent open surgical drainage.
    • The second patient required a pericardiectomy.

    Findings:

    • A total of thirteen cases of primary meningococcal pericarditis have been documented.
    • All reported patients with this condition survived.
    • Survival rates for primary meningococcal pericarditis are higher than for other causes of purulent pericarditis.

    Implications:

    • Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for favorable outcomes.
    • Primary meningococcal pericarditis may have a better prognosis than previously thought.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the specific factors contributing to survival in these cases.
