    Newborn feeding tubes made with ti-octyltrimellitate (TOTM) plasticizer maintain flexibility, unlike those with di-octylphthalate (DOP). This sustained flexibility enhances safety for infant enteral nutrition.

    Background:

    • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) feeding tubes plasticized with di-octylphthalate (DOP) can develop stiffness, leading to medical complications.
    • Stiffness in feeding tubes can impact patient comfort and efficacy of enteral feeding, particularly in vulnerable infant populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the flexibility of PVC feeding tubes manufactured with a nonmigrating plasticizer, ti-octyltrimellitate (TOTM).
    • To compare the stiffness development of TOTM-plasticized PVC tubes against traditional DOP-plasticized PVC tubes in infant use.

    Main Methods:

    • Two sizes (#5 French and #8 French) of both DOP and TOTM PVC feeding tubes were assessed.
    • Tube stiffness was monitored over 5 to 8 days of use in infant patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Ti-octyltrimellitate (TOTM) plasticized PVC feeding tubes demonstrate sustained flexibility.
    • The use of TOTM offers a significant improvement in maintaining tube flexibility, enhancing the safety of enteral feeding for newborn infants.
