The value of parotid sialography

Summary

This study examined the diagnostic value of parotid sialography in 100 patients. It found that the technique provided useful information in over half of cases and influenced diagnosis or treatment decisions in about a fifth. The highest benefit was seen in patients with swelling in both parotid glands. However, no useful information was obtained in patients with a single lump in the parotid region. The findings suggest that sialography is most helpful when both glands are affected and may not be necessary for isolated unilateral lumps.
