Palliative embolization in gynaecological patients.

Summary

Palliative embolization offers a treatment option for advanced gynecological cancers when other therapies fail. This study reports on embolizing renal or hypogastric arteries in nine patients to manage bleeding from malignancies.

Background:

Palliative embolization is considered for gynecological malignancies when standard treatments (irradiation, surgery, chemotherapy) are not feasible or contraindicated.
Uncontrolled bleeding from advanced gynecological cancers poses a significant clinical challenge.
Metastatic disease to the kidney can also complicate management.

Purpose of the Study:

To report the experience with palliative embolization in patients with gynecological malignancies.
To evaluate the use of embolization for managing inoperable bleeding and metastatic disease.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of nine patients with gynecological malignancies undergoing palliative embolization.
Embolization of the renal artery in one patient for renal metastasis.
Bilateral or unilateral embolization of hypogastric arteries in eight patients using Gelfoam and/or Gianturco coils for bleeding control.

Main Results:

Successful embolization was performed in all nine patients.
The procedures addressed either renal metastasis or inoperable bleeding from pelvic malignancies.
Specific agents used included Gelfoam and Gianturco coils.

Conclusions:

Palliative embolization is a viable option for managing complications of advanced gynecological cancers.
Hypogastric artery embolization effectively controls bleeding in inoperable cases.
Renal artery embolization can be used for managing isolated metastases.
