    Area of Science:

    • General Practice
    • Health Services Research
    • Primary Care Medicine

    Background:

    • General practices vary in appointment lengths and patient outcomes.
    • Understanding the impact of consultation duration on patient care is crucial for optimizing primary care services.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between general practice appointment consultation length and patient outcomes.
    • To determine if longer consultations correlate with improved patient outcomes, such as reduced prescriptions and follow-up needs.

    Main Methods:

    • Comparative analysis of two general practices with differing appointment lengths.
    • Collection and analysis of data on appointment consultations over a four-week period.
    • Tracking patient return rates for further attention within a subsequent four-week period.

    Main Results:

    • Practices with longer consultations had a lower proportion of appointments ending in prescriptions.
    • Longer appointment durations were associated with a reduced need for scheduled follow-up appointments.
    • Patients in practices with longer consultations were less likely to seek further appointments within four weeks for new illness episodes.

    Conclusions:

    • Extending general practice appointment consultation times may lead to more efficient patient care.
    • Longer consultations appear to reduce the need for repeat appointments and prescriptions, potentially improving patient outcomes and resource utilization.
