Plugged haversian canals and local dose in radium cases
Haversian canal plugging in bone, a marker of vascular damage, strongly correlates with local radium dose. Both radium-226 and radium-228 isotopes equally contribute to this bone lesion.
Area of Science:
- Bone pathology
- Radiation biology
- Vascular damage
Background:
- Haversian canal plugging indicates vascular damage in bone from radium exposure.
- Previous studies linked plugging incidence to whole-body radium dose.
- The relationship between local bone dose and plugging remained unclear due to bone's vascular network.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the correlation between local radium dose and Haversian canal plugging in human humeri.
- To compare the effectiveness of radium-226 and radium-228 in causing vascular damage in bone.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of 16 sections from humeri of three human radium cases with varying radium body burdens.
- Comparison of osteon plugging incidence with local radium dose in adjacent bone sections.
- Statistical analysis using linear regression to determine the relationship between percent plugged canals (PCP) and radiation dose.
Main Results:
- A high correlation (r=0.97) was found between PCP and local radium dose.
- The regression equation PCP = (0.00214 +/- 0.00014) rad + (3.26 +/- 3.6) was established.
- Background plugging incidence in normal humeri was low (average 0.3%).
- Both radium-226 and radium-228 were equally effective in causing plugged canals when normalized for dose.
Conclusions:
- Local radium dose is a significant factor in Haversian canal plugging.
- Both radium-226 and radium-228 contribute equally to this radiation-induced bone pathology.
- Findings clarify the dose-response relationship for vascular damage in bone following radium exposure.
