    Area of Science:

    • Biomaterials Science
    • Regenerative Medicine
    • Urology

    Background:

    • Biodegradable synthetic membranes are being explored for tissue reconstruction.
    • The poly(epsilon-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine) membrane offers potential as a scaffold for tissue regeneration.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the biodegradability and efficacy of a poly(epsilon-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine) membrane as a graft for rabbit urinary bladder reconstruction.

    Main Methods:

    • A full-thickness segmental resection of the rabbit urinary bladder was performed.
    • The resected segment was replaced with the synthetic biodegradable membrane.
    • Animals were monitored for 1 year post-implantation.

    Main Results:

    • The synthetic membrane gradually biodegraded, providing a framework for normal bladder tissue regeneration.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • No urinary tract complications, including bladder stones or infections, were observed.
  • Renal function remained undisturbed, and bladder capacity and function were largely preserved.
  • Conclusions:

    • The biodegradable poly(epsilon-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine) membrane demonstrates suitability for urinary bladder reconstruction.
    • The material supports tissue regeneration and is well-tolerated in vivo.
    • Further clinical investigation is warranted for this promising biodegradable graft.
