Factors influencing patient acceptance of Varilux 2 lenses

The acceptance of Varilux 2 lenses by habitual wearers of various conventional bifocal types (FT 22, FT 25, FT 28, Executive, Round, and Invisible blended along with 3 trifocal types) was investigated to determine if wearers of any particular bifocal would exhibit a significantly higher or lower acceptance rate. In addition, wearers of each bifocal type were categorized as hyperopic, emmetropic, or myopic to study the effect of corrected ametropia on acceptance rate. The results did not demonstrate any acceptance rate among wearers of the various bifocal types that was definitely different. The major differentiating factor appeared to be refractive correction since the hyperopic wearers exhibited an acceptance rate (81.8%) that was substantially higher than those of the emmetropic (68.8%) and myopic (63.6%) wearers. There was an overall acceptance rate of 73.5% for the 49 patients who were randomly selected for the study. Classifications of the wearers on the basis of sex, age, and bifocal add powers revealed no demonstrable differences in acceptance rate, although the failure to find a difference among the bifocal add powers may have been influenced by the distribution of refractive corrections within this particular categorization.
