    Summary

    Finger joint contractures are more common in diabetic patients but do not reliably indicate diabetic retinopathy. This study found no direct link between contractures and retinopathy development or type.

    Background:

    • Diabetic microangiopathy, particularly retinopathy, is a significant complication.
    • Joint contractures have been hypothesized as an early indicator of microvascular damage in diabetes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between finger joint contractures and diabetic retinopathy.
    • To determine if contractures serve as an early marker for retinopathy development.

    Main Methods:

    • Prevalence of finger joint contractures was assessed using the painted hand technique.
    • Comparison between diabetic patients with and without retinopathy and an age-matched control group.
    • Analysis included duration of diabetes and glycemic control (HbA1).

    Main Results:

    • Contractures were significantly more prevalent in diabetic patients (25.2%) than in controls (7.5%).
    • Prevalence of contractures did not differ significantly between diabetic patients with (29.5%) and without retinopathy (20.8%).
    • Contracture prevalence showed no variation with retinopathy type, diabetes duration, or glycemic control.

    Conclusions:

    • Finger joint contractures are more common in adult diabetic patients.
    • Contractures are not a reliable early indicator for the development of diabetic retinopathy.
    • Further research may be needed to understand the underlying mechanisms.
