    Background:

    • Benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) can lead to chronic papilledema and visual failure.
    • Medical treatments for BIH are not always effective, necessitating alternative interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of optic nerve decompression in treating BIH.
    • To investigate the mechanism of action of optic nerve decompression in preserving optic nerve function.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 14 patients with BIH who underwent optic nerve decompression.
    • Assessment of pre- and post-operative visual function, papilledema, and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure.

    Main Results:

    • All patients experienced resolution of papilledema and visual obscurations post-surgery.
    • 5 out of 6 patients with pre-existing visual failure showed no further deterioration.
