Furcation involvement in maxillary and mandibular molars.

I F Ross, R H Thompson

    Journal of Periodontology
    |August 1, 1980

    Summary

Many molars with furcation involvement (F.I.) can function well for years, challenging the view that F.I. has an unfavorable prognosis. This study suggests reevaluating treatment and prognosis for these common dental findings.

    Area of Science:

    • Dentistry
    • Periodontology
    • Oral Health

    Background:

    • Furcation involvement (F.I.) in molars is often considered to have a poor prognosis.
    • Previous research indicated that many molars with F.I. can remain healthy and functional long-term.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the prevalence and long-term outcomes of molars with furcation involvement.
    • To challenge existing beliefs regarding the unfavorable prognosis of teeth with F.I.
    • To propose a reevaluation of treatment strategies for molars exhibiting F.I.

    Main Methods:

    • The study builds upon previous findings regarding molar survival with furcation involvement.
    • Data analysis likely involved retrospective review of patient records and clinical examinations.
    • Radiographic and clinical examinations were used to detect furcation involvement.

    Main Results:

    • Furcation involvement is a common finding, occurring more frequently than expected.
    • Maxillary molars were three times more likely to exhibit F.I. than mandibular molars.
    • A significant number of molars with F.I. demonstrated successful function for 5 to 24 years.

    Conclusions:

    • The prognosis and treatment of molars with furcation involvement require reevaluation.
    • Therapeutic approaches should focus on enhancing the functional environment of teeth with F.I.
    • Extraction or surgical intervention may not be necessary in many cases of molar F.I.
