    Histamine challenge in asthma patients caused reduced airflow (FEV1) and increased blood oxygen. Steroids or cromoglycate blunted this oxygen rise, which bronchodilators reversed.

    Background:

    • Extrinsic bronchial asthma involves airway hyperresponsiveness.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of histamine-induced bronchoconstriction on arterial oxygen tension in asthma patients.

    • Nine patients with extrinsic asthma underwent incremental histamine challenges.
    • Measurements included FEV1 and arterial oxygen blood tension (PaO2).
