Insights
This study highlights contrastless radiography as a valuable tool for diagnosing intestinal perforation in 49 neonates and infants. The findings emphasize its role in understanding clinical presentation and guiding treatment decisions.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Neonatal Medicine
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Intestinal perforation is a critical surgical emergency in neonates and infants.
- Accurate and timely diagnosis is essential for improving patient outcomes.
- Traditional diagnostic methods may have limitations in this vulnerable population.
Observation:
- The study analyzed 49 cases of intestinal perforation in neonates and infants.
- Clinical presentations, diagnostic challenges, and treatment strategies were documented.
- The utility of contrastless radiography was specifically evaluated.
Findings:
- Contrastless radiography provided valuable diagnostic information for intestinal perforation.
- This imaging technique aids in understanding the clinical picture of perforation.
- It supports the decision-making process for surgical and non-surgical management.
Implications:
- Contrastless radiography should be considered a key diagnostic modality for neonatal and infant intestinal perforation.
- Improved diagnostic accuracy can lead to earlier intervention and better prognoses.
- Further research can explore the integration of this technique into standard diagnostic protocols.
Abstract:
The authors described 49 neonates and infants with perforation of the intestine. The clinical picture of perforation, peculiarities of its diagnosis and the treatment are presented. A special emphasis is laid upon contrastless radiography providing quite a valuable information for the diagnosis.
