    Summary

    Primary lung sarcomas are rare tumors. Tumor size is the most critical prognostic factor, with smaller tumors (2-3 cm) indicating a better outcome after surgical removal.

    Background:

    • Primary lung sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm.
    • These tumors originate from mesenchymal tissues within the lung.
    • Diagnosis and prognosis can be challenging due to rarity and varied presentations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of primary lung sarcoma.
    • To identify prognostic factors for patients with primary lung sarcoma.
    • To evaluate the role of tumor size in patient survival.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 18 patients diagnosed with primary lung sarcoma.
    • Analysis of clinical, radiographic, gross, and histologic findings.
    • Correlation of treatment modalities and tumor characteristics with patient outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • 18 patients (10 female, 8 male; age 22-77) diagnosed with primary lung sarcoma.
    • Common symptoms included cough, chest pain, and dyspnea; 9 patients were asymptomatic.
    • Tumor sizes ranged from 2-16 cm; histological subtypes included fibrosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, hemangiopericytoma, and osteosarcoma.
    • Complete surgical removal was the primary treatment.
    • Four patients survived disease-free for 3-18 years post-surgery, all with tumors measuring 2-3 cm.

    Conclusions:

    • Tumor size is the most significant prognostic indicator in primary lung sarcoma.
    • Smaller tumor size (≤3 cm) is associated with improved long-term survival.
    • Early detection and complete surgical resection are crucial for favorable outcomes.
