    Background:

    • Presbyopia is an age-dependent decline in the eye's ability to focus on near objects, affecting most individuals over 40.
    • The exact causes of presbyopia remain unproven, and a suitable animal model for research has been lacking.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the age-dependent changes in accommodation in rhesus monkeys.
    • To determine if rhesus monkeys can serve as a valid animal model for studying human presbyopia.

    Main Methods:

    • Measurements of refraction, axial dimensions, and pharmacologically-induced accommodation were taken in rhesus monkeys aged 0.5 to 32 years.
    • Accommodative amplitude was assessed across different age groups.

    Main Results:

    • Accommodative amplitude declined with age, from over 40 diopters in young monkeys to 5 diopters in older animals (over 25 years).
    • The rate of decline and the relationship between lens thickness and age were similar to humans.
