    Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) was investigated for its role in pancreatitis. Researchers found no significant difference in AATD phenotypes between pancreatitis patients and healthy individuals, suggesting AATD is not a major risk factor for pancreatic disease.

    Background:

    • Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a genetic disorder known to cause lung and liver disease.
    • Pancreatitis is a serious inflammatory condition of the pancreas with various causes.
    • The potential link between AATD and pancreatitis requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between alpha 1-antitrypsin (AAT) phenotypes and pancreatitis.
    • To determine if specific AAT phenotypes are more prevalent in patients with pancreatitis.

    Main Methods:

    • A case-control study comparing Pi phenotype distribution.
    • Patient group: 90 individuals with diagnosed pancreatitis (acute and chronic).
    • Control group: 549 healthy blood donors.

    Main Results:

    • No statistically significant differences in Pi phenotype frequencies were observed between pancreatitis patients and the control group.
