    Area of Science:

    • Pharmacology
    • Gynecology
    • Pain Management

    Background:

    • Primary dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological condition characterized by painful menstruation.
    • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as naproxen, are frequently used to manage dysmenorrhea symptoms.
    • Different formulations (e.g., oral tablets, rectal suppositories) may influence therapeutic efficacy.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of naproxen tablets versus naproxen suppositories in treating primary dysmenorrhea.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of different naproxen delivery methods on pain relief and symptom management.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, cross-over clinical trial was conducted.
    • Thirty-two patients with primary dysmenorrhea participated, treated over 128 menstrual cycles.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients received either naproxen tablets or suppositories during the trial.
  • Main Results:

    • Both naproxen tablets and suppositories provided significant overall relief from primary dysmenorrhea symptoms.
    • Naproxen tablets demonstrated a statistically significant superior effect in relieving spasmodic pain compared to suppositories (p < 0.05).
    • Treatment failures were not correlated with the occurrence of vomiting or diarrhea.

    Conclusions:

    • Naproxen, in both tablet and suppository forms, is an effective treatment for primary dysmenorrhea.
    • Naproxen tablets may be preferred for patients experiencing significant spasmodic pain.
    • Vomiting does not appear to be a primary factor in the therapeutic failure of oral NSAIDs for dysmenorrhea.
