    Summary

    This study found that the renal kallikrein-kinin and prostaglandin systems are normal in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) who do not have apparent kidney disease, suggesting these systems are not altered in early-stage PSS.

    Background:

    • Progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) can affect renal function.
    • Understanding the role of renal systems in PSS is crucial for early detection and management.
    • The kallikrein-kinin and prostaglandin systems are key regulators of renal hemodynamics and sodium balance.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate plasma renin activity and urinary kallikrein, kinin, immunoreactive PGE (iPGE), and aldosterone excretion in PSS patients without clinically apparent renal disease.
    • To compare these parameters with sex- and race-matched normal controls.
    • To determine if the renal kallikrein-kinin and prostaglandin systems are altered in early PSS.
