Background:

Sigmoid volvulus is a common cause of large bowel obstruction, particularly in certain populations.
The exact etiology of sigmoid volvulus remains incompletely understood.
Understanding anatomical variations may offer insights into predisposition.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate anatomical characteristics of the sigmoid colon in a Zambian population.
To explore potential correlations between sigmoid colon morphology and the incidence of sigmoid volvulus.
To identify factors that may contribute to the high prevalence of sigmoid volvulus in Zambia.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional study involving 103 Zambian adults (73 males).
Measurement of key sigmoid colon variables: length, mesentery height, mesentery attachment length, and mesentery thickness.
Data analysis focused on mean values across sexes.

Main Results:

Mean sigmoid colon length: 32.9cm (men) and 29.5cm (women).
Mean mesentery height: 8.2cm (both sexes).
Mean mesentery attachment length: 10.3cm (men) and 10.8cm (women).
Mean mesentery thickness: 3.0mm (both sexes).

Conclusions:

The measured anatomical variables of the sigmoid colon in Zambians were inconclusive.
The findings did not elucidate the etiology or contributing factors of sigmoid volvulus.
Further research is needed to understand the underlying causes of sigmoid volvulus in this demographic.
