    Summary

    Multiple cutaneous focal mucinoses, a rare skin condition, were observed in a patient with myxedema. These mucinous papules resolved with L-thyroxine treatment, indicating a link between hypothyroidism and this skin manifestation.

    Background:

    • Myxedema is a severe form of hypothyroidism.
    • Cutaneous mucinous deposits can occur in various conditions.

    Observation:

    • A 54-year-old woman presented with numerous discrete papules on the skin.
    • These lesions were clinically and histologically consistent with cutaneous focal mucinosis (cutaneous myxoma).
    • The patient had a diagnosis of myxedema.

    Findings:

    • The cutaneous mucinous papules showed a remarkable response to L-thyroxine replacement therapy.
    • This suggests a direct link between hypothyroidism and the development of multiple cutaneous focal mucinoses.
    • This presentation is a previously undescribed manifestation of hypothyroidism.

    Implications:

    • Cutaneous focal mucinosis can be an indicator of underlying hypothyroidism.
    • Differentiating this condition from other mucin-depositing syndromes is crucial for appropriate management.
    • Effective treatment of hypothyroidism can lead to the resolution of these skin lesions.
