    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Oncology
    • Medical Devices

    Background:

    • Malignant strictures and tracheoesophageal fistulas are severe complications of esophageal carcinoma.
    • These conditions significantly impair patients' quality of life due to dysphagia and pulmonary aspiration.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of polyvinyl esophageal prosthetic tubes in managing malignant esophageal strictures and tracheoesophageal fistulas.
    • To assess the impact of these prostheses on patient quality of life.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 14 consecutive patients with esophageal carcinoma complications were treated.
    • Polyvinyl esophageal prosthetic tubes were constructed and inserted to bridge the malignant strictures and fistulas.

    Main Results:

    • The prosthetic tubes were found to be easy to construct and simple to insert.
    • Most patients experienced significant improvement in dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).
    • Incessant coughing due to pulmonary aspiration was diminished, improving overall well-being.

    Conclusions:

    • Polyvinyl esophageal prosthetic tubes offer a practical and effective solution for managing malignant esophageal strictures and tracheoesophageal fistulas.
    • The use of these prostheses can substantially improve the quality of remaining life for patients with advanced esophageal cancer.
