    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the status of continuing education for laboratory personnel in West Virginia.
    • To identify the demand for and participation in continuing education programs among this demographic.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey was distributed to 90 laboratories in West Virginia.
    • A total of 638 completed questionnaires were returned from 1,155 mailed.

    Main Results:

    • 96.6% of respondents expressed a desire for continuing education.
    • Only 65.2% had attended a program in the past five years.
    • A low attendance rate (15.8%) was reported for programs sponsored by West Virginia University.

    Conclusions:

    • There is a significant unmet need for continuing education among laboratory personnel in West Virginia.
    • Current participation rates suggest a gap between desire and access/engagement.
    • A tailored continuing education program model is proposed to meet identified needs.
