    Summary

    The carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) assay showed a statistically significant difference in elevated levels between high-risk thyroid patients and healthy controls. However, its low activity and specificity make it unrewarding for thyroid cancer screening.

    Background:

    • Thyroid diseases pose a significant health concern, particularly in populations with a history of head and neck irradiation.
    • Early detection of thyroid abnormalities is crucial for effective management and improved patient outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) assay in screening for thyroid diseases.
    • To assess the diagnostic performance of CEA in a high-risk population previously irradiated for benign conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • A screening program was implemented involving 735 patients at high risk for thyroid diseases.
    • CEA levels were determined for these patients and compared to 1875 healthy control subjects.
    • Statistical analysis was performed to compare CEA levels between the two groups.

    • Elevated CEA levels were found in 3.1% (22 out of 735) of the high-risk patient group.
