    Summary

The peroral pneumocolon examination provides detailed double-contrast imaging of the terminal ileum and right colon. This technique is useful for diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease and identifying polyps when other methods fail.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Diagnostic Imaging
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • The terminal ileum and right colon require detailed imaging for accurate diagnosis.
    • Conventional barium enema studies may be poorly tolerated or insufficient in certain cases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the peroral pneumocolon examination technique.
    • To highlight its indications for visualizing the ileocecal region.

    Main Methods:

    • A peroral pneumocolon examination involves rectal air insufflation.
    • Oral barium is administered, reaching the right colon to create a double-contrast image.
    • A small catheter is inserted into the rectum for air insufflation.

    Main Results:

    • The method yields a double-contrast image of the terminal ileum and right colon.
    • It allows for detailed visualization of the ileocecal region.

    Conclusions:

    • Peroral pneumocolon examination is indicated for detailed ileocecal imaging.
    • It is particularly valuable when inflammatory bowel disease is suspected, polyps are present, or barium enemas are not tolerated.
