    Summary

    Postnatal exposure to low-dose cadmium (CdCl2) in rats increased spontaneous locomotor activity and improved performance in spatial learning tasks. These findings suggest subtoxic cadmium levels can impact neurobehavioral development.

    Background:

    • Cadmium (Cd) is a known toxicant, but its behavioral effects at subtoxic doses are understudied.
    • Understanding the impact of early-life exposure to environmental toxicants is crucial for public health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the long-term behavioral effects of postnatal subtoxic cadmium exposure in Sprague-Dawley rat pups.
    • To assess changes in spontaneous locomotor activity and spatial learning/reversal performance.

    • Rat pups received oral cadmium chloride (CdCl2) at doses from 0.25 to 7.0 mg/kg from postnatal days 6-15.
