Traumatic olecranon bursitis is often associated with olecranon spurs and calcium deposits. These findings were significantly more common in patients than in controls, suggesting a link between bursitis and bony abnormalities.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Radiology
    • Sports Medicine

    Background:

    • Traumatic olecranon bursitis is a common condition affecting the elbow joint.
    • The underlying radiographic changes associated with this condition are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the radiographic differences between elbows affected by traumatic olecranon bursitis and healthy controls.
    • To identify potential bony abnormalities or structural changes associated with olecranon bursitis.

    Main Methods:

    • Radiographic comparison of the affected elbow in 28 patients with traumatic olecranon bursitis against the contralateral elbow of 28 matched controls.
    • Assessment for olecranon spurs, amorphous calcium deposits, bursal nodules, and septations.
    • Air injection into the bursa in a subset of patients to evaluate bursal morphology.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Olecranon spurs and/or amorphous calcium deposits were significantly more prevalent in patients (16/28) compared to controls (4/28; p < 0.01).
    • Radiographic findings in patients included bursal nodules (10/12) and partial septations (8/12) after air injection.
    • Olecranon spurs were observed at the triceps tendon insertion site in 6 patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Traumatic olecranon bursitis is frequently associated with radiographic abnormalities such as olecranon spurs and calcium deposits.
    • These findings suggest a potential link between underlying bony structures and the development of olecranon bursitis.
