Postsalpingectomy endometriosis: a reassessment

R J Stock

    Summary

This study reexamined endosalpingiosis in fallopian tubes after sterilization. Researchers found no evidence of endosalpingiosis, but did find endometriosis lesions unrelated to tubal ligation pain.

    Area of Science:

    • Gynecologic pathology
    • Reproductive medicine
    • Surgical outcomes

    Background:

    • Sampson's concept of endosalpingiosis describes ectopic tubal epithelium.
    • Histologic examination of fallopian tubes is crucial for understanding gynecologic conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To reevaluate Sampson's concept of endosalpingiosis.
    • To investigate the presence of endosalpingiosis in women undergoing sterilization and hysterectomy.

    Main Methods:

    • Histologic examination of fallopian tubes from 54 women.
    • Analysis of lumens for evidence of transplanted or proliferating tubal epithelium.
    • Correlation of findings with endometriosis and post-tubal ligation pain.

    Main Results:

    • No histologic evidence of endosalpingiosis was identified in the fallopian tubes.
    • Endometriosis lesions were found in 21% of the tubes examined.
    • Endometriosis findings were not associated with post-tubal ligation pelvic pain.

    Conclusions:

    • The study did not support Sampson's concept of endosalpingiosis based on the histologic findings.
    • Endometriosis is a common finding in the fallopian tubes but may not be linked to pain after tubal ligation.
