Hemolytic uremic syndrome and metastatic malignancy

Background:

Observation:

• A patient presented with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and advanced renal failure.
• The patient also had metastatic adenocarcinoma of the prostate.
• HUS symptoms showed rapid improvement following treatment.

Findings:

• Treatment included blood transfusions, Plasmanate, aspirin, dipyridamole, and hemodialysis.
• No chemotherapy was administered for the prostate cancer.
• The patient's HUS resolved despite the presence of metastatic cancer.

Implications:

• Adult HUS can have a favorable prognosis, even with significant renal impairment.
• The presence of metastatic cancer does not preclude a positive outcome for HUS.
• This case highlights the importance of supportive management for HUS, irrespective of concurrent malignancies.
