    Newborns can possess Immunoglobin M (IgM) antibodies against the Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen (T antigen). This finding was not linked to maternal anti-T levels or immunoglobulin concentrations in mothers or infants.

    Background:

    • The Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen (T antigen) is a cryptic antigen expressed on red blood cells.
    • Antibodies to the T antigen (anti-T) can cause red blood cell agglutination and pose challenges in blood transfusions.
    • The presence and significance of anti-T antibodies in newborns are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of IgM antibodies to the T antigen in newborn infants.
    • To explore potential correlations between newborn anti-T antibodies and maternal factors or immunoglobulin levels.
    • To discuss the implications of newborn anti-T antibodies for serological diagnostics, particularly in cases of polyagglutination.

    Main Methods:

    • Detection of IgM antibodies to the T antigen using the normal agglutination technique.
    • Analysis of serum samples from 73 newborn children.
