    Summary

    High alpha activity during REM sleep arousals significantly increased lucid dream ratings. Alpha feedback training did not impact lucidity or REM alpha levels, but similarities between lucid dreams and meditation were noted.

    Background:

    • Lucid dreaming, an awareness of dreaming during the dream state, is associated with specific brain activity.
    • Understanding the neural correlates of lucid dreaming can provide insights into consciousness.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha activity during REM sleep and lucid dream recall.
    • To determine the effect of alpha feedback training on lucidity and REM sleep alpha levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Ten participants with good dream recall underwent two nights of polysomnography in a sleep laboratory.
    • Participants were awakened four times per night during REM sleep: twice during high REM alpha activity and twice during low REM alpha activity.

    • Further research is warranted to explore the overlap between lucid dreaming and meditative states.
