    Summary

    Abnormal left ventricular function during exercise in mitral valve prolapse (MVP) patients may not always signal coronary artery disease. Isolated MVP can also cause exercise-induced left ventricular dysfunction.

    Background:

    • Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a common valvular heart condition.
    • Assessing left ventricular (LV) function during exercise is crucial for diagnosing cardiac pathologies.
    • The role of exercise in unmasking LV dysfunction in isolated MVP requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the exercise-induced changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP).
    • To differentiate the LV functional response to exercise between patients with isolated MVP and those with MVP and coronary artery disease (CAD).

    Main Methods:

    • Radionuclide angiography was performed at rest and during exercise in 30 patients with confirmed MVP.
    • Patients were categorized into two groups: isolated MVP (12 patients) and MVP with associated coronary artery disease (18 patients).

    Conclusions:

    • An abnormal LV functional response during exercise does not exclusively indicate coronary artery disease and can be observed in isolated MVP.
    • Exercise-induced left ventricular dysfunction may be a subtle manifestation of isolated MVP, detectable only under stress conditions.
