K M Klewin, R E Appen, P L Kaufman

    American Journal of Ophthalmology
    |November 1, 1978

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Gastroenterology

    Background:

    • Peptic ulcer disease is a common gastrointestinal condition.
    • Hemorrhage is a serious complication of peptic ulcer disease.

    Observation:

    • A 57-year-old male with a history of alcoholism presented with permanent bilateral blindness and optic atrophy.
    • The visual loss was a complication of hemorrhage from peptic ulcer disease.

    Findings:

    • Post-hemorrhagic visual loss is a recognized complication.
    • It typically affects middle-aged, debilitated individuals.
    • Visual loss can occur shortly after repeated hemorrhage episodes from any site.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential for severe visual impairment from gastrointestinal bleeding.
    • Ophthalmologists and gastroenterologists should be aware of this association.
    • Early recognition and management of hemorrhage are crucial to prevent vision loss.
